David Letterman
Broad Ripple High School
Class of 1965

David Letterman is a comedian, late night talk show host, television producer, philanthropist, and an American icon. You can add Indy Racing League car owner to this soaring Rocket’s list of achievements.

After graduating from Broad Ripple, Mr. Letterman studied radio and television at Ball State University, where he earned a B.A. in telecommunications. He worked as an anchor and weatherman for WTHR (Channel 13) where he gained notice for his madcap on-air behavior, which included erasing state borders from the weather map and predicting hail stones “the size of canned hams.”

In 1975, Mr. Letterman moved to Los Angeles where he performed at The Comedy Store and wrote material for sitcoms including Good Times.  His dry, sarcastic humor caught the attention of talent scouts for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Mr.  Letterman was soon a regular guest on the show. In 1980, he was offered his own NBC show, the critically-acclaimed daytime David Letterman Show which was a ratings disappointment. In 1982 and in a different time slot, he struck gold with Late Night with David Letterman.

Mr. Letterman also is co-owner of the open-wheel racing team known as Team Rahal, with former Indianapolis 500 champion Bobby Rahal. He’s the founder of Worldwide Pants – a television production company which also produced Everybody Love Raymond, The Late, Late Show and Ed. He has received several Emmys both as a comedy writer and for his talk show.
