Freddie Hubbard is remembered as one of Indianapolis' great jazz musicians. A trumpeter in the Tech band, Hubbard joined a group of teens known as the Jazz Contemporaries and performed at the famous George's Bar on Indiana Avenue. At age 20 he moved to New York, where he teamed with veteran jazz artists Sonny Rollins, Slide Hampton and Quincy Jones. At 22, on the recommendation of Miles Davis, Hubbard recorded his first album. Throughout the 1960s Hubbard played with a variety of bands, but he achieved his greatest success in the 1970s, winning a Grammy Award for his album, First Light. |
